Does the work I submit for my application have to be published?

No – your application submissions can be anything from university assignments to internship work. The best advice for these submissions is try demonstrate some variety and your individual style as a journalist.

Can the three-month placement start date be flexible?

 Yes – if you are successful in your application, you will have the opportunity to arrange a start date that best suits you to complete the three-month placement.

Can international students apply?

No – the scholarships are only open to Australian citizens and permanent residents.

Does my verifier have to be my lecturer?

Not necessarily – your verifier can be anyone from your university or learning institution, they just need to be able to verify your work and that your application is your own.

How can I make my application stand out?

Be yourself and be honest – the networks are looking for applicants who are strong willed and willing to speak up about what they think. To make your application stand out, through your short response and your submissions try to show your unique style and voice, as well as any ideas you may have about improving and modernising the industry going forward.

Do I have to be from Sydney to apply?

No – you can apply from anywhere in Australia, successful interstate applicants will also receive an additional $3,000 assistance package to help move and live in Sydney for the duration of the placement.

Can I still apply if I have already graduated?

Yes – these opportunities are available to any prospective young journalists even if you have already graduated, the only caveat is that you must not already receive the majority of your income from journalism.

Can I apply for both scholarships?

Yes – and you are encouraged to do so, both represent a fantastic opportunity you get your foot in the door and experience an operational metro newsroom.
