When do entries open and close for 2026?
Entries open on Friday, 01 May, 2026 and will close at midnight on Wednesday, 01 July, 2026. You may also edit your entry after submitting it up until the deadline.
When will finalists and winners be announced?
Finalists will be digitally announced on Friday, 31 July, 2026. The Kennedy Foundation will individually reach out to finalist after the announcement to ensure they are made aware of the good news.
The winners of each category will then be announced in Sydney at the 2026 Kennedy Awards Presentation Dinner, Friday, 21 August, 2026.
What is the entry fee?
The Student Journalist of the Year Category fee is $25
Can I be a postgraduate student to enter? - Yes, any student currently studying an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at an Australian University or similar institution is eligible.
Do I have to be a full-time student? - Yes, all applicants must be full-time students at the time of applying for the award.
What happens if I am a finalist? - The three finalists will be invited to attend our annual Kennedy Awards Presentation Dinner, where the winner will be announced on stage in front of some of the biggest names in Australian media.
What makes an application stand out? - The judges will focus on excellence in fundamental journalistic skills, creativity, originality, writing, production values, impact and great storytelling. Try to show some variety in your body of work, as well as pieces that reflect your individual style and flare.
